North Korea is becoming more strategically important to China as a counterweight to the United States, but Pyongyang may hold back from deepening military cooperation with Beijing, analysts say.
During a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping said both sides should “enhance exchanges in diplomacy, law enforcement and military affairs”, according to state news agency Xinhua.
The statement marks a rare public call for closer military ties between the two neighbors. Analysts say the move sends a signal not only to Washington but also to Moscow, as China seeks to balance its relations with both global powers.
Despite pledges from both sides to strengthen strategic communications, the future of denuclearisation talks remains uncertain.
