Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in North Korea on Monday for his first visit since 2019, pledging “unwavering” friendship and deeper ties with a country that is expanding its nuclear weapons and strengthening its partnership with Russia.
In an article published by the North Korean state newspaper Rodong Sinmun, Xi wrote: “No matter how times change or how the international situation evolves, the friendship between China and North Korea remains invincible.” He called for the two nations to “strengthen exchanges” and deepen cooperation.
The visit comes as North Korea continues to develop its nuclear arsenal and faces international sanctions. Xi’s trip signals China’s continued support for its isolated neighbor, despite global pressure to curb Pyongyang’s weapons programs. The two leaders are expected to discuss economic aid and regional security, though denuclearization is unlikely to be a priority.
