The cost of a single Patriot interceptor missile is estimated to be in the millions of dollars. In a prolonged conflict, the side that can field, repair, and sustain its forces faster often wins, regardless of the technological sophistication of the individual platforms. The billions spent on complex platforms might be better allocated to stockpiling artillery shells and investing in logistics networks that can withstand a multi-year war of attrition.
Rethinking the Threat Landscape
The core issue is a failure to adapt to the specific nature of the Russian threat. Russia does not seek to match NATO’s technological superiority platform-for-platform. Instead, they have adapted to a strategy of mass, electronic warfare, and drone dominance that seeks to neutralize the West’s advantages.
If the West continues to pour billions into legacy platforms without a concurrent investment in counter-drone technology, cyber defense, and resilient supply chains, it risks building a Maginot Line of the 21st century—a defense that is impressive on paper but obsolete upon contact.
The debate is not about whether to rearm, but how. The billions must be spent, but they must be spent wisely. The evidence from the front lines is clear: the future of defense is not in the size of the tank, but in the sophistication of the network that connects the sensors to the shooters, and the ability to sustain that network under relentless attack. Failure to pivot now will leave Europe with a formidable military that is, paradoxically, unprepared for the war it may actually have to fight.
