A sweeping investigation into illegal sports betting and associated money laundering has led to dozens of detentions across Turkey, targeting football executives, former officials, and financial networks.

Turkish authorities have significantly expanded a long-running probe into an alleged illegal betting ring within the nation's football league. The investigation, which has sent shockwaves through Turkish sports, focuses on suspicions of match manipulation for gambling profit and the subsequent laundering of criminal proceeds [3966].

In the latest operations, police detained 24 more suspects, including Erden Timur, the former acting president of Galatasaray Sportif AŞ, a major subsidiary of the famous Istanbul football club Galatasaray [35126]. This follows a separate round where 21 suspects were arrested in the same "gambling investigation" [37317]. In a related but distinct financial crime operation codenamed "VEPARA," authorities detained 20 people accused of using sophisticated digital methods to transfer and hide illegal money, some of which allegedly originated from illegal sports betting ">[35125].

The probe also revisits historical match-fixing allegations. A separate judicial thread involves former Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Vice-President Lütfi Arıboğan and former executive İlhan Helvacı. They were detained and later released under judicial control measures over allegations of involvement in a "plot" concerning a 2011 match-fixing case against rival club Fenerbahçe [34917][35019]. Four individuals were previously detained in this "match-fixing conspiracy" investigation [34565].

Prominent football commentator and former referee Ahmet Çakar has also been ensnared in the betting probe, with a court barring him from overseas travel as the investigation continues [25165].

While several articles reference unrelated investigations into narcotics or media groups, the core and recurring topic across the majority of reports is the multifaceted crackdown on financial crimes linked to football and illegal gambling in Turkey. The series of operations indicates a coordinated effort by prosecutors to target both the alleged betting activities and the complex financial networks believed to facilitate them.
