Turkey and Panama Rocked by Twin 5-Magnitude Earthquakes
Two separate earthquakes struck Turkey and Panama, with authorities reporting no immediate damage or casualties from either quake.
A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Turkey in the Mediterranean Sea on Monday evening, while a 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit Panama, according to seismic monitoring agencies.
Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the quake's epicenter was 253 kilometers from the Datça district of Muğla province in western Turkey, at a depth of 9.07 kilometers [277645]. The National Earthquake Center of the Ministry of Emergency was also monitoring the situation [277645].
In Panama, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a 5.4-magnitude earthquake [275997]. The GFZ, which monitors seismic activity worldwide, did not immediately provide further details including the depth and exact location of the epicenter [275997].
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from either earthquake [275997].
Both quakes were moderate in magnitude. A 5.4 quake is considered moderate and can be felt widely, but significant damage is unlikely unless buildings are poorly constructed.
