Indonesia Speeds Aid to 843 Animal Feed Banks as Storms and Drought Hit Sumatra and Maluku
Indonesia is ramping up disaster response across multiple regions, delivering emergency supplies to storm-damaged factories in Sumatra while preparing for drought-driven livestock shortages nationwide.
The Ministry of Industry is fast-tracking recovery efforts for small and medium-sized industries in Sumatra that were damaged by recent storms, providing direct support to rebuild facilities and replace lost equipment to protect local jobs and supply chains [188186]. At the same time, the Ministry of Agriculture is activating 843 animal feed banks across all 34 provinces to prepare for the El Nino weather phenomenon, which often causes drought and reduces livestock feed supplies [188161]. The feed banks store emergency fodder for cattle, goats, and other livestock, aiming to stabilize feed availability during dry months and prevent farmers from losing animals due to hunger or high feed prices [188161].
Separately, Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is conducting simultaneous emergency responses to address drought and tidal waves in the Maluku region, coordinating relief efforts to mitigate the impact on local communities [188160]. The National Alms Agency (Baznas) has also distributed 300 hygiene kit packages and blankets to residents in earthquake-affected areas of Central Sulawesi, supporting basic hygiene and warmth for people displaced by the disaster [188183].
