The pressure is mounting on Chelsea's young coach, Liam Rosenior. After a crushing 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, the team's usual excuses have run out.
Chelsea often point to their inexperienced squad, injury list, or the manager's learning curve. For parts of the first leg, they even played well. But the context is damning.
The club has spent approximately $1.8bn to build this team. A recent Premier League inquiry also found Chelsea previously gained a competitive advantage through historical rule-breaking.
While the league's punishment was lenient, the performance against PSG was not. Overturning a 5-2 first-leg loss was always difficult. However, the 3-0 second-leg defeat revealed a deeper problem.
PSG scored twice in the first 15 minutes and then controlled the game completely. Chelsea lacked not just attacking ideas, but basic organization. The result was a clear and embarrassing humiliation.
