The United Nations Security Council has extended its mission to stop illegal arms shipments to Libya. Member states can now continue to inspect vessels on the high seas suspected of violating the long-standing arms embargo.
A draft resolution from France and Greece secured passage with 13 votes in favor. Russia and China, two permanent members of the council, chose to abstain rather than veto the measure.
This renewal allows naval forces to stop and search ships in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya. The goal is to prevent weapons from fueling conflict within the politically divided North African nation. The council first authorized these inspections in 2020.
