A California animal shelter has successfully treated a rare and shocking medical condition in a kitten named Zoe, who was found with her body severely inflated by air.
The San Diego Humane Society took in the 4-month-old kitten after she was discovered with subcutaneous emphysema. This condition causes air to become trapped underneath the skin, making the animal appear blown up like a balloon.
Veterinarians performed an urgent procedure to remove the air. They discovered the inflation was caused by a tear in Zoe's windpipe, likely from an unknown injury.
Following surgery, the air slowly released from her body over several days. Zoe has now made a full recovery and has been adopted into a permanent home.
Veterinarians warn that such dramatic swelling in an animal is a medical emergency requiring immediate care.
