Russia has secured access to military ports in the Gulf of Guinea. This new privilege comes from a cooperation agreement signed with the West African nation of Togo.
The two countries finalized the deal on November 19. The signing occurred during Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé's official visit to Moscow.
The agreement grants each nation's naval vessels permission to use the other's military ports. This provides the Russian navy with a strategic foothold in a resource-rich and busy shipping region.
