A top United Nations official has issued a stark warning, stating that global development is now the world's primary shield against instability.
Marcos Athias Neto, UN Assistant Secretary-General, said the world is in a profound development crisis. He argued that development must not be seen as secondary or charitable work.

It has become, in his words, the "first line of defense."
