A Democratic senator has praised former President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He predicts the nominee will be confirmed.
Senator Peter Welch of Vermont called the nominee, Markwayne Mullin, "honest" and "competent." Welch contrasted Mullin with Trump's previous choice, Kristi Noem. Noem withdrew from consideration last week.
Welch, a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, stated plainly, "He'll be confirmed." The comment shows rare cross-party support for a key national security appointment.
If confirmed, Mullin would oversee agencies like the Border Patrol and the Coast Guard. The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for border security and disaster response.
