The United States government has accused Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and key aides of "narco-terrorism." American officials claim they conspired to flood the U.S. with cocaine.
This accusation is part of a series of legal actions and sanctions against Mr. Maduro's government. The U.S. Department of Justice has announced indictments against the Venezuelan leader.
At the same time, the U.S. has proposed a new transitional government framework for Venezuela. The plan suggests temporarily removing both Mr. Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaidó from power.
It would then establish a council to organize elections. This dual strategy has sparked debate over the ultimate goal of the U.S. actions.
