Spain's chief prosecutor, Alvaro Garcia Ortiz, has resigned. This follows a Supreme Court ruling last week that found him guilty of illegally leaking confidential information.
The court determined that Garcia Ortiz unlawfully revealed details about the tax status of a businessman. This businessman is the partner of a leading member of the opposition People's Party (PP).
The conviction prompted his immediate departure from the high-ranking position. His resignation marks a significant development in the case.
