Hong Kong has approved longer test routes for self-driving cars, moving the technology closer to real-world use.
The city's Transport Department announced the update on Monday. A pilot licence, held by tech firm Baidu Apollo International, now allows tests from Hong Kong International Airport to Sunny Bay and Tung Chung town centre on Lantau Island.
This is the latest cross-district trial for autonomous vehicles in Hong Kong. Officials say the expanded tests support a government goal. That goal is to safely introduce driverless vehicles for travel between different city districts.
The plan was first set out in recent government policy addresses. The trials aim to ensure any future application of the technology is safe and orderly.
