China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi has strongly criticized the new Japanese Prime Minister for recent statements about Taiwan. Wang Yi stated that the Prime Minister's remarks "crossed a red line."
As a senior Politburo member, Wang is the highest-ranking Chinese official to address the issue. He said China must "resolutely respond" to protect its sovereignty and post-war achievements.
Wang Yi expressed shock that Japan's leader would send a "wrong signal of attempting military intervention." He emphasized that China would defend its core interests following the comments, which Beijing views as a serious challenge.
The dispute centers on China's claim over Taiwan, which it considers a breakaway province. Chinese officials consistently warn other nations against any action that supports Taiwan's independence.
