Ireland's data watchdog has launched an investigation into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. The probe will focus on the company's handling of personal data used to train its artificial intelligence (AI) tool, named Grok. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) is acting on behalf of the entire European Union. It will examine if X broke the EU's strict data protection rules, known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). A key concern is whether X properly gathered user data to train its AI models. The investigation will also assess the platform's policies on generating realistic but fake media, known as "deepfakes." Under GDPR rules, violations can result in massive fines. Authorities can penalize companies up to 4% of their global annual revenue. This EU action follows X's recent launch of Grok. The AI chatbot can create text responses and images. The move places X alongside other tech giants facing increased EU scrutiny over AI and data privacy.
