The European Central Bank (ECB) has fined France's Crédit Agricole. The penalty is for the bank's failure to properly assess its climate-related financial risks.
Under ECB supervisory rules from 2020, banks must evaluate how climate change could affect their business. This includes risks from extreme weather or a shift away from carbon-intensive industries.
The ECB stated that Crédit Agricole was 75 days late in completing this mandatory assessment. The fine underscores the ECB's stricter enforcement of climate risk management.
Banks are now expected to fully integrate these "climate-related risks" into their standard financial reporting and planning.
