Kathy Ruemmler, the chief legal officer of Goldman Sachs, has resigned. Her departure follows the release of court documents detailing her past professional contacts with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Ruemmler stated her resignation was necessary to protect the bank's reputation. "My responsibility is to put Goldman Sachs' interests first," she said.
The newly public records show Ruemmler communicated with Epstein in 2018. At the time, she was a partner at a law firm and Epstein was a potential client. Goldman Sachs has stated it was unaware of these contacts when hiring her.
Ruemmler served as Goldman's general counsel for three years. The bank has named a successor to lead its legal department.
Epstein was arrested in 2019 on sex trafficking charges. He died by suicide in jail while awaiting trial.
