Organizers of the Hong Kong Victoria Harbour Race are planning to expand the event after more than 3,700 people swam in Saturday's competition. The participants included Olympic medalist Siobhan Haughey.
Ronnie Wong Man-chiu, President of the Hong Kong China Swimming Association, stated that the main challenge to increasing the participant limit beyond 10,000 is the number of available lifeguards. The amount of time swimmers spend in the water is also a key factor.
To solve the lifeguard shortage, organizers are considering recruiting lifeguards from mainland China. This would allow more people to join the popular annual swim.
