The state of Texas has urgently asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in a redistricting dispute. On Friday, state officials filed a request to stop a lower court's ruling that rejected newly drawn maps for congressional voting districts.
A federal court recently threw out the maps, stating they were illegal. The court found that the new districts were drawn primarily for political advantage, not based on racial data.
Texas is now asking the Supreme Court to put that ruling on hold. The state argues the decision must be paused ahead of the candidate filing deadline for the 2024 elections, which begins next month.
