The European Union has sanctioned a top commander of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The EU accuses the paramilitary group of committing "grave and ongoing atrocities" in its siege of the city of el-Fasher.
These new measures target the RSF's second-in-command. The sanctions include a travel ban and an asset freeze.
The EU stated the sanctions are a direct response to the RSF's military operations in el-Fasher. The city is the last major holdout of the Sudanese army in the western Darfur region.
This action is part of broader international efforts to pressure the warring parties in Sudan. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has caused a severe humanitarian crisis.
