Portugal's election has sent two clear messages to Europe.
First, the "Anyone But Him" strategy can work. In Portugal, mainstream parties united to block the far-right Chega party. They urged voters to support whichever mainstream candidate had the best chance of winning in their area. This coordination prevented a far-right victory.
Second, the far-right's influence is still growing. Even though Chega did not win, it tripled its number of seats in parliament. This shows a major shift in the country's politics.
The lesson for Europe is this: strategic cooperation between traditional parties can stop the far-right from taking power. But it does not solve the deeper problem of rising support for their ideas. The far right remains a strong political force.
