Japanese regulators have taken a key step toward restarting the world's biggest nuclear power plant. They have formally approved a draft authorization for Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco).
This move brings the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant closer to resuming operations. The plant has been idle since the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
If finalized, this would mark a major milestone for Tepco. It would be the first time the utility restarts a nuclear reactor since the Fukushima accident led to a nationwide shutdown. The Nuclear Regulation Authority must still conduct a final review before granting full operational permission.
