A senior official in Malaysia's Kedah state has defended the use of Chinese text on a foundation stone for a new tire factory. The inscription has sparked criticism in a country where public displays of Chinese language can sometimes trigger debates over national identity.
The controversy started after photographs from a groundbreaking ceremony circulated online. The images showed a foundation stone for the Prinx Tire Malaysia plant featuring prominent Chinese characters. Prinx Tire Malaysia is the local subsidiary of a Chinese tire manufacturer.
Critics accused authorities of applying a double standard, suggesting other languages would not receive the same treatment. The official defended the decision, stating the text was appropriate for an event involving a Chinese company.
Such language disputes occasionally arise in multi-ethnic Malaysia. Public use of Chinese script can become a sensitive issue concerning political loyalty and national culture.
