The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt reopened today. However, Israeli restrictions mean the opening is largely symbolic.
Egyptian state media reports that only 50 people will be allowed to leave Gaza per day. Another 50 will be permitted to enter. These strict limits severely constrain movement for Gaza's 2.3 million residents.
Israel controls the Palestinian population registry. It must approve all names for crossing. This gives Israel authority over who can use the border.
The reopening follows intense diplomatic pressure. It offers limited relief for foreign passport holders and critically ill patients. For most Gazans, the crossing remains effectively closed.
