Federal Judge Orders End to National Guard Deployment in Washington

A federal judge has ruled that the U.S. government must end its deployment of National Guard troops in Washington, D.C. U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb issued the order on Thursday. She stated that the long-term military presence violates the Constitution.
Judge Cobb concluded that the deployment illegally overrides the authority of local Washington officials to manage their own police force. However, she delayed the effect of her order for 21 days. This hold allows the federal government time to file an appeal.
The ruling is the result of a lawsuit filed by District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb. The legal action challenged the Trump administration's months-long use of troops to support police in the nation's capital.
