A powerful storm in the central Mediterranean Sea may have caused the disappearance of up to 1,000 migrants, a rescue group reports.
The non-governmental organization (NGO) Mediterranea Saving Humans warned that Cyclone Harry created the "most dangerous maritime conditions" recorded in the area in 20 years. The severe weather makes crossing attempts extremely perilous.
The group fears several boats that departed from Libya and Tunisia are lost. Search and rescue operations are currently hindered by the storm's aftermath.
The central Mediterranean route is one of the world's deadliest migration paths. Cyclones of this intensity are rare in the region.
