Top Democrats in Congress are demanding to know why the nation's senior intelligence official was present during an FBI raid in Georgia.
Senator Mark Warner and Congressman Jim Himes, who lead the Senate and House intelligence committees, sent a letter to Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines on Thursday. They requested an immediate briefing on her presence at Wednesday's operation at a Georgia election facility.
The lawmakers stated they are "deeply concerned" by her involvement. They emphasized that the U.S. intelligence community's mission is to focus on foreign threats, not domestic law enforcement actions.
The FBI has not commented on the nature of the raid. The unusual presence of the spy chief has raised significant questions about the operation's purpose and scope.
