The European Union has added Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its official list of terrorist organizations.
The decision was announced by the EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell. It marks a significant diplomatic shift for the 27-nation bloc.
The IRGC is a major Iranian military, political, and economic force. Listing it as a terrorist group means the EU can now freeze its assets and ban travel for its members.
This move increases pressure on Iran. The EU accuses the IRGC of supplying drones to Russia for its war in Ukraine and of suppressing protests inside Iran.
The listing is largely symbolic for now, as the IRGC has no significant EU assets to freeze. However, analysts say it severely limits any future diplomatic relations with Tehran.
