Malawi's government has announced a critical funding gap in its disaster relief efforts. The shortfall is 71 billion Malawian kwacha, or approximately $41 million USD.
The Chief Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr. Justin Adack Saidi, made a new appeal for international aid. He requested additional food and humanitarian supplies.
The appeal comes as neighboring Zimbabwe donated relief items. This donation included maize, rice, and water purification chemicals. The assistance from Zimbabwe arrived in Malawi on Tuesday.
The funding shortage affects the response to ongoing crises. Malawi frequently faces climate-related disasters, including droughts and storms, which displace thousands of citizens each year.
