Uganda’s communications regulator has told the public to ignore social media posts claiming a second internet shutdown is coming.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) issued the denial on Tuesday. It called the claims false and said no such shutdown had been announced.
This follows a real internet shutdown that happened last week. The UCC had ordered that service be stopped for what it called "national security" reasons. Service was later restored.
Social media rumors suggested another shutdown was planned. The UCC statement directly rejects these claims. It urges citizens to rely only on official announcements from the commission.
Internet shutdowns involve governments or service providers intentionally disrupting access. They are often criticized for restricting the flow of information.
