Hong Kong police have arrested a man and seized 800 kilograms of illegal fireworks worth HK$1 million. The discovery comes just three weeks before Lunar New Year celebrations, a period of high demand for pyrotechnics.
Officers found the haul on Monday afternoon. It was hidden inside 58 boxes within a shipping container in the Tai Lam Chung area of Tuen Mun.
A senior inspector stated the container was rented by the arrested suspect. Police did not release the man's identity but confirmed he has been charged with illegal possession of fireworks and firecrackers.
The operation was conducted by the New Territories North anti-triad unit. Authorities are investigating the source and intended destination of the goods.
Lunar New Year, beginning February 10, often sees illegal firework use despite strict regulations. The seized pyrotechnics weigh approximately 1,764 pounds.
