A former Philippine mayor has been sentenced to life in prison for human trafficking. Alice Guo was found guilty on Thursday for operating a large-scale scam hub north of Manila.
Guo was dismissed last year as mayor of Bamban town in Tarlac province. She had also faced allegations of being a spy for China, though the conviction was specifically for human trafficking.
The court ruled that Guo managed a "mega-scam center" that exploited victims. Two other individuals were also convicted in the case.
