Suica Penguin, Japan's Beloved Transit Mascot, to Retire in 2027

The Suica Penguin, the famous mascot for a Japanese transit card, will retire in 2027. Its issuer, the East Japan Railway Company (JR East), made the announcement on November 11.
The friendly penguin has appeared on the widely-used Suica smart card since 2001. It will officially retire at the end of the 2026 financial year, which is March 31, 2027.
The news has saddened many fans across Japan. The character is widely regarded as the country's most popular penguin.
