Hong Kong is not ready for its winter flu season, a top medical expert warns. Vaccination rates for most groups are below the key 70 per cent target needed for community-wide protection.
Professor David Hui Shu-cheong issued the alert on Saturday. He chairs the government’s scientific committee on emerging diseases. Hui urged the public to get vaccinated before the Lunar New Year holiday. This period sees a high risk of spread due to frequent social gatherings.
The professor noted that 70 to 80 per cent of severe flu cases occur in people who have not received their annual shot. He emphasized that herd immunity is crucial to protect vulnerable populations and prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed.
Health authorities are encouraging all eligible residents, especially children and the elderly, to get vaccinated immediately.
