U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance will travel to Azerbaijan and Armenia in February. The trip was announced by former President Donald Trump.
The goal of the visit is to support ongoing peace talks between the two nations. Vance will also promote what Trump calls the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity." This is Trump's stated foreign policy plan.
The South Caucasus region has a long history of conflict. Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a war in 2020 over the Nagorno-Karabakh territory. A swift Azerbaijani military operation in 2023 retook the area, leading to a new push for a peace agreement.
The visit signals continued high-level U.S. involvement in the negotiations. It follows talks between the two countries' leaders.
