A train marketed as "rapid" in Thailand recently completed a 750-kilometer journey in over 17 hours, averaging just 43 kilometers per hour.
The State Railway of Thailand's Special Express Train No. 7 left Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat station at 3:10 p.m. It arrived in Chiang Mai at 8:35 a.m. the next day. The scheduled travel time was 15 hours and 25 minutes.
The term "rapid" is an official classification for Thai trains making fewer stops. It does not refer to high speed. The train's average speed was slower than many local commuter services in other countries.
Passengers reported the delay was due to waiting for other trains on shared tracks. Thailand's single-track northern line creates traffic jams, especially with increased freight transport.
This incident highlights the challenges facing Thailand's aging rail infrastructure. Major upgrades and new double-track lines are under construction but not yet complete.
The journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by car takes approximately 10-12 hours.
