Iraq has issued a direct demand to European Union nations. The government in Baghdad says EU countries must repatriate their citizens who are detained in Iraq on terrorism charges related to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
These detainees are foreign nationals accused of joining ISIS. They are currently held in Iraqi prisons. Iraqi officials state that the continued detention of these individuals poses a long-term security and financial burden on their country.
The Iraqi call highlights a major unresolved issue from the conflict against ISIS. Many foreign fighters were captured in Iraq and Syria. Their home countries have often been reluctant to take them back due to security concerns and legal challenges.
Iraq's position is clear: the primary responsibility for these detainees lies with their countries of origin. The EU has not yet issued a unified response to this latest demand from Baghdad.
