China's naval force, the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), has become the largest in the world by number of ships. This follows a historic five-year expansion.
The fleet now operates advanced warships. These include new aircraft carriers, larger amphibious assault ships, and guided-missile destroyers. The navy has also expanded its reach with more overseas port visits and exercises.
Military analysts point to two main goals. The first is to dominate the seas near China, like the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea. The second is to protect Chinese trade routes and interests globally.
Future growth will likely focus on technology, not just size. Key areas include developing new aircraft carrier capabilities, stealth submarines, and advanced weapons like hypersonic missiles. The term "hypersonic" refers to missiles that fly at least five times the speed of sound, making them very hard to intercept.
This naval power shift is closely watched by other nations, especially the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region. The next five years will show how China uses its growing fleet.
