Former U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith testified that his investigation into the 2020 election had evidence to charge more people. He said the probe ended before he could make final decisions.
Smith spoke at a congressional hearing on Thursday. Republican Representative Brad Knott of North Carolina questioned him. Knott asked why only former President Donald Trump was charged, and not others.
In response, Smith stated his team believed they had "proof to charge other people." He explained the investigation concluded while he was still reviewing the evidence. "I was in the process of making that determination when our work was concluded," Smith said.
The testimony reveals the 2020 election case might have been broader. Smith’s team did not finish deciding who else to charge before the investigation closed.
