Former U.S. President Donald Trump broke the law in connection with the January 6 Capitol riot. This accusation came from prosecutor Jack Smith in a hearing on Thursday.
Smith made the statement before the House Judiciary Committee. This committee is led by Trump's own Republican Party.
Smith, who served as a special counsel, was appointed to investigate Trump. He told lawmakers, "Donald Trump is the person who caused Jan. 6."
The hearing focused on the attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021. A mob of Trump's supporters tried to stop the certification of the 2020 election results.
Smith's direct testimony to a GOP-led panel is a significant event. The former president is currently the Republican candidate for the 2024 election.
