A new impeachment complaint was filed against Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday. It accuses him of overseeing a massive scheme to steal public funds through fake flood control projects.
The complaint, led by civil society groups and endorsed by the opposition Makabayan bloc in Congress, alleges systematic corruption. It claims taxpayers were cheated out of billions of dollars for "ghost" infrastructure—projects that do not exist or were never completed.
Public anger has grown for months. The Philippines, a nation of 116 million people, was hit by powerful typhoons in the past year. The storms caused devastating floods that submerged entire towns, highlighting the critical need for working flood defenses.
The impeachment filing directly links the alleged corruption to this disaster. It argues that the missing funds intended for flood control left communities dangerously exposed.
The complaint now moves to the House of Representatives, where Marcos's allies hold a majority. This makes the success of the impeachment bid unlikely. However, it places significant political pressure on the president and keeps the corruption scandal in the public eye.
