Kazakhstan's parliament has passed a new law that limits public discussion of LGBTQ+ issues. The legislation bans what it terms the "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations."
This law restricts the distribution of information about LGBTQ+ relationships in media and online. It also prevents public gatherings that officials claim promote LGBTQ+ identities.
Critics argue the law violates Kazakhstan's international human rights commitments. They state it harms the LGBTQ+ community and suppresses freedom of expression.
The legislation now awaits the president's signature to become official. If approved, it will align Kazakhstan more closely with similar restrictive laws in Russia.
