A new focus group reveals a political risk for President Trump. Some voters who switched from supporting Barack Obama in 2012 to Donald Trump in 2016 say recent immigration raids are excessive.
These voters, often called "Obama-Trump" voters, participated in a research discussion. They expressed strong concern about operations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Some described the tactics as overly harsh.
The same voters, however, praised the President's approach to foreign policy. They specifically approved of his efforts to buy Greenland from Denmark and his pressure on Venezuela's leadership.
The findings highlight a potential conflict. The very immigration actions that energize some of the President's supporters are unsettling a different, crucial part of his political base. This group could be vital in the 2020 election.
