A federal judge has temporarily stopped the U.S. government from reviewing materials taken from a Washington Post journalist.
The order came after The Post filed its first legal response to a search of a reporter's home last week. In the filing, the newspaper demanded the return of all seized items, which include phones and computers.
The judge's decision prevents investigators from examining the devices while the legal dispute continues. The case centers on the protection of confidential sources, a key principle for news organizations.
The government has not yet publicly stated its reason for the search. Legal experts say this type of action against a journalist is rare.
