A U.S. House committee has voted to hold former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress.
The House Oversight Committee took the action on Wednesday. The vote was bipartisan, meaning members of both major political parties supported it.
The contempt charge stems from the Clintons' alleged refusal to comply with subpoenas. A subpoena is a legal order to provide documents or testimony. The committee is investigating their connections to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Many Democratic members on the panel called the contempt charges extreme. They argued that the Clintons have shown a willingness to answer questions.
The full House of Representatives must now vote on whether to formally hold the Clintons in contempt.
