The European Union has halted all work on a potential trade deal with the United States.
The move was announced by Bernd Lange, head of the European Parliament's trade committee. He stated the process is frozen "until further notice."
Lange linked the decision directly to U.S. intentions regarding Greenland. "Our sovereignty and territorial integrity are at stake," he said. "Business as usual is impossible."
Greenland is a self-governing territory of EU member state Denmark. Its strategic location and resources have drawn increased international interest.
The EU's action signals a major diplomatic rift. Trade talks, which have been stalled for years, are now formally suspended over this geopolitical dispute.
