Passenger train service on Johannesburg's Vereeniging line is set to resume, officials have announced. The line has been closed since 2020, when services were suspended during South Africa's COVID-19 lockdown.
The resumption follows extensive repairs to damaged infrastructure. This includes fixing signaling systems and replacing stolen copper cables.
The Vereeniging line is a major commuter route. It connects Johannesburg's city center with southern areas like Soweto and Vereeniging itself.
Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) officials confirmed the planned restart. They stated that safety inspections are the final step before services reopen.
The return of trains will provide a critical, affordable transport option. Many residents have relied on more expensive minibus taxis since the shutdown.
