A former top economic adviser to Donald Trump says the U.S. president's recent interest in buying Greenland was only a strategic move.
Larry Kudlow, who served as Director of the National Economic Council, stated that the proposal was a "negotiating tactic." He made the comments in a recent interview.
The idea, which Denmark called "absurd," caused a diplomatic dispute. It led Trump to postpone a state visit to Copenhagen.
Kudlow's remarks suggest the offer was not a serious policy goal. Instead, it may have been a way to gain leverage in future discussions. The tactic appears to have aimed at opening broader talks with Denmark on trade and security.
Greenland is a vast, autonomous Danish territory rich in natural resources. Its current government has repeatedly stated it is not for sale.
